It happens when there has is an unsuccessful ending to a struggle or contest. In the other sense it refers to getting the better of, or win a victory over something. In this sense it signifies the successful attempt at defeating the other. Wins and defeats are equally important as you cannot get to know the meaning of either till you have experienced them with respect to the other.
